Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Michael Meyer, the driving force behind the impressive growth of Skal Club Düsseldorf. As President, Michael has infused the club with renewed energy and enthusiasm, setting a benchmark for membership development. His innovative strategies and active engagement with the Skal community have made Düsseldorf a model club for others to follow. In this interview, Michael shares his journey of growing the club, his approach to membership development, and how he has brought new life to Skal Düsseldorf.
Skal Europe: Michael, thank you for joining us. Can you start by telling us about the situation you faced when you first took on the role of President of Skal Club Düsseldorf?
Michael Meyer: Thank you for having me! When I became President, Skal Club Düsseldorf was at a crossroads. Although we had a solid foundation, it was clear that we needed to inject some fresh energy and direction to make the club more vibrant and appealing. I saw this as an opportunity to revitalize the club, and I set out to create an environment that would not only retain our current members but also attract new ones.
Skal Europe: What was your vision for the club, and how did you start implementing changes to bring that vision to life?
Michael Meyer: My vision was to make Skal Düsseldorf a dynamic and inclusive space where tourism professionals could connect, exchange ideas, and feel part of a supportive community. I started by organizing a variety of events that catered to different interests within the industry, from informal networking dinners to more structured professional development sessions. The key was to create a sense of excitement and belonging, showing that Skal is a place where members can grow both personally and professionally.
Skal Europe: One of your notable achievements is the significant membership growth. What strategies did you use to attract new members to the club?
Michael Meyer: I realized early on that we needed to actively reach out to potential members rather than waiting for them to come to us. I began engaging with local politicians, tourism organizations, and businesses to raise awareness about Skal and the benefits of being part of our network. I also made sure to invite prospective members to our events, giving them a chance to experience the Skal spirit firsthand. It was important to follow up with them after these events, making them feel welcome and valued, which helped convert their interest into active membership.
Skal Europe: How did you balance being a more experienced Skal member while still bringing a sense of fresh energy to the club?
Michael Meyer: I believe that enthusiasm and passion have no age limit. Despite not being a “younger Skål member,” I approached my role with the same energy and excitement as if I were starting fresh. It was important for me to lead by example, showing that Skal isn’t just about attending meetings but about actively participating, contributing, and creating a sense of community. I think that spirit resonated with our members and helped generate a renewed sense of purpose within the club.
Skal Europe: You’ve been actively involved in international committees and World Congresses. How has this involvement influenced your approach to growing Skal Düsseldorf?
Michael Meyer: Being involved at an international level has been incredibly enriching. It allowed me to see how other clubs operate, learn from their experiences, and bring those insights back to Düsseldorf. It also showed our members that Skal is more than just a local club—it’s a global network with countless opportunities for professional development and connections. This broader perspective made it easier to communicate the value of Skal to potential members and demonstrate why being part of our club can be such a rewarding experience.
Skal Europe: What role do you believe Skal Düsseldorf plays in the larger Skal community now?
Michael Meyer: I believe Skal Düsseldorf has become a shining example of what’s possible with the right approach to membership development. We’ve shown that with dedication, creativity, and a genuine commitment to building a strong community, a club can thrive and grow even in challenging times. Our journey serves as a reminder that Skal is not just an organization—it’s a living, dynamic network that can adapt and flourish with the right leadership and member engagement.
Skal Europe: Finally, what advice would you give to other clubs looking to expand their membership and create a more vibrant community?
Michael Meyer: My advice is to be proactive and never be afraid to try new approaches. Engage with your local community, collaborate with other organizations, and most importantly, make every member feel valued and included. Create events that offer real value, and show potential members that Skal is more than just a club—it’s a place where they can grow, connect, and be part of something meaningful. When you approach membership development with passion and commitment, it naturally attracts others who want to be part of that journey.
Skal Europe: Michael, thank you for sharing your experience and insights. Your dedication and achievements with Skal Düsseldorf are truly inspiring, and we appreciate your contributions to the Skal community.
Michael Meyer: Thank you! It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited to see how Skal Düsseldorf and the wider Skal community continue to grow and evolve.
