Across Borders, Through Friendship: The Skål Alpine Golf Challenge 2026

The 8th Skål Alpine Golf Challenge comes to Zell am See from 18 to 20 October 2026, continuing a travelling tradition that brings together Skålleagues from across the Alpine regions of Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Mountains do not necessarily follow the borders drawn on maps.

The Alps connect communities, destinations and tourism economies across several European countries. They also provide the setting for a distinctive Skål tradition that has developed across this shared region: the Skål Alpine Golf Challenge.

Each year, the event moves to a different destination, with a different Skål Club taking responsibility for welcoming fellow members. Clubs from the Alpine regions of Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland participate in a tradition that combines sport with something fundamental to Skål: meeting one another, developing friendships and creating professional connections across borders.

In 2026, that responsibility passes to Skål International Zell am See, which will welcome participants to Austria from 18 to 20 October for the eighth edition of the Challenge.

A travelling Alpine tradition

The changing destination is an important part of the character of the Alpine Golf Challenge.

Rather than belonging permanently to one place, the event travels through the Alpine Skål community. Each host Club has the opportunity to introduce fellow Skålleagues to its destination, its hospitality and its particular part of the Alps.

For tourism professionals, this has an additional value. Experiencing a destination alongside the people who live and work there provides a perspective that is difficult to reproduce through a conventional professional visit.

At the same time, returning participants meet again in a different setting each year. New participants enter the network. Relationships develop across Clubs and national borders.

The result is something larger than an annual golf tournament: a recurring point of connection among tourism professionals who share both an extraordinary European region and the Skål tradition of doing business among friends.

Zell am See takes the lead in 2026

This year’s hosts have chosen an exceptional setting.

The tournament will be played in Stableford format at the Leading Golf Course Zell am See-Kaprun, surrounded by the landscape of the Austrian Alps. But the invitation from Skål International Zell am See makes clear that sporting performance is only one dimension of the gathering. The organisers place equal emphasis on enjoying the game, fostering friendships and networking in the spirit of Skål.

Ursula Auer, President of Skål International Zell am See, expresses that purpose simply:

“Let us spend a few unforgettable days together, strengthen existing friendships, and create new connections.”

That sentence could almost describe the Alpine Golf Challenge itself.

Every edition provides an opportunity to renew relationships established during previous gatherings while creating space for new ones to begin.

Golf brings people together, but you don’t have to play

Another characteristic of the Challenge is equally important: it is not an event exclusively for golfers.

Skålleagues who do not play are explicitly invited to participate. For 2026, the hosts are preparing an accompanying programme, subject to weather conditions, with possibilities including Lake Zell, Top of Salzburg, the Kaprun High Mountain Reservoirs and a guided city tour.

The programme is deliberately social. Participants arrive on Sunday for a welcome gathering and dinner. Monday brings the tournament and destination experiences, followed by an aperitif and Gala Dinner with Prize Giving Ceremony. The gathering concludes after breakfast on Tuesday.

Those apparently simple moments are important.

Professional networks need structures, meetings and communication channels. But they also need opportunities for people to spend time together without every conversation having a predetermined objective.

A round of golf, an excursion, dinner or a conversation overlooking an Alpine landscape can create precisely that space.

An Alpine network without borders

There is something particularly appropriate about this model for Skål.

The participating Clubs belong to different countries and operate within different tourism markets, but they share a geographical region whose tourism challenges and opportunities frequently cross national boundaries.

The Alpine Golf Challenge does not need to become a formal institutional forum to contribute to that relationship.

Its value lies precisely in being something different: a recurring, informal meeting point maintained by the Clubs themselves and passed from one host destination to another.

One year Austria, another year another part of the Alpine region. Different landscapes, different hosts and different experiences, but a community that continues to meet.

The 2026 appointment

This year, it is Zell am See’s turn to welcome the Alpine Skål community.

The 8th Skål Alpine Golf Challenge will take place from 18 to 20 October 2026, with registration open until 15 September 2026.

Golfers will have their tournament. Non-golfers will have the opportunity to experience the destination. Everyone will have time to meet.

And when this year’s gathering ends, the Challenge will eventually move on to another Alpine destination, another host Club and another landscape.

The location changes. The connections continue.
